We bookworms read a lot, that’s a given right? but we also read many things and not just traditional books… we read, comics, poetry, graphic novels and of course we read Manga… Some of us do at least..
Since deciding to host #Tropeathon (@tropeathon on Twitter) I have been doing my recommendations for every challenge — helpful little bookworm that I am — and I couldn’t leave out my fellow Manga readers am I right?
I’m doing my basic disclaimer that although I enjoy reading manga I’m not an expert on it at all — I’m just there for the fun and the stories basically — Anyway, I’m sharing with you some popular tropes found all through the Shonen, Shoujo, Seinen spectrum of Manga and my recommendations for each one..
Later on, I’ll give you guys some ideas on manga that would fit every challenge of #tropeathon if this is your jam .. just go for it…
Parents Suck
This is by no means the real name of this trope but it should be, it has to do with basically shitty parenthood.. either by neglect, or just mistreatment of the lead character..
My recommendations:
- Ao no Exorcist
- Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch,
Simple Minded Chosen One
There’s always that character that is just a slice of honey bread .. and we can forget that he has the most amazing powers known to humanity because he/she has to save the world — or train to save it at the very least..
My Recommendations:
- Kenja no Mago
- Akatsuki no Yona
Bad Ass Transfer Student
Easy to explain, the rebel type that just came to a new school to literally put everything on its head… it could be withawesome super powers, fighting squill or just the use of his brain..
My Recommendations
- Shokugeki no Souma
- Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry
Other Worlds
Incredibly popular trope, because we all would like to be reincarnated in another younger version of ourselves who lives in a fantasy world with awesome powers and a group of friends who would help us hunt down demons, ghouls, or whatever… right??
My recommendations:
- Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari
- Kenja no Mago
- Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu
The Power of Friendship
Friendship is the catalyst of whatever happens next.. whether is a rescue attempt, a revenge plot, or just growing up ..
My Recommendations
- Owari no Seraph
- Omoi, Omoware, Furi, Furare
Love Triangle
Love it or hate it it’s always there…
My recommendations
- Aoba-kun ni Kikitai Koto
- Kuzu No Honkai
- Namaikizakari
Unrequited Love
There’s always that person who we pine for, knowing it would be impossible because .. reasons .. or wouldn’t it
My recommandation
- Ao Haru Ride
Bad boy/Bully Crush
The appeal of the dark and twisted, and the idea of redemption, although sometimes I do questions how far is too far??
My Recommendations
- Hana Yori Dango
- Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji
Dark and Edgy
This is a new trope for me and I’m loving the heck out of it because it adds depth to the manga.. and it’s not all light and fluff all the time or over power characters but more emotional drama (along side the over power character..LOL)
My recommendations
- Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari
- Dororo
- Attack on Titan
Mangas for #TropeAthon
These are my recommendations in case you decide to try out readiong a Manga for any of the prompts given on tropeathon.. It’s sometimes easier than reading a whole book but beware you might get so hook into the story that you won’t want to put it down — and some are really long ones..
Chosen One – Akatsuki no Yona
Perfect Chosen One story for those who are just diving into manga.. amazing characters and so easy to grasp — although is still ongooing and it’s a long one..
Other Worlds – Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari, Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu
Both Great Reincarnation in a fantasy world type of story but much ore complex in their message.
Forbidden – Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii, Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru
One a light hearted age gap relationship and the other a more twisted siblings romance for thos who love a more dark approach.
Enemies to Lovers – Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji
Such a fun bully story.. truly hilarious
Slow Burn – Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet
The sweetest of slow burn romances and it’s finished so it can be read completely and it also works as a forbidden one because of the age gap..
I know that this is just ,merely scratching the surface of the tons of manga tropes out there.. just let me know in the comments if you would like another post like this one.. with some other popular manga tropes and recommendations..
As Always
Happy Reading
