You know how we preach that we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover? only to go and do just that.. Don’t lie we all do it…Sometimes we are not even aware we are doing it.. That’s what this series of posts is all about (at least I hope so). I want to talk about those characters, books, series that we might overlook because we believe them to be something they are not…
Maybe we think they are silly because we find them in a rom-com, or maybe they just lack the depth the story required… All in all, these things that are much more than meets the eye..
I chose three male manga/anime characters that on the surface may seem frivolous, stereotypical, and silly.. but that actually have so much more depth to them.. Not only throught their development in their stories, but also in their personalities… They certainly are more than they appear…
Shigure Souma (Fruits Basket)
This Manga is quite an old one but it has been brought to life again because of its 2nd anime adaptation.. The story itself it may seem whimsical; dealing with magic some fantasy and coming of age stories mingle together. However there are the usual stereotypical characters, the “good” girl that will save them all from their curse, The bad boy, the Prince like guy who will get overlook… And Among those we find a secondary character who at first will seem like a comedic relief of sorts with a pervy undertone (it’s manga)… But guys, he has so much more to him.. He is thoughtful, insightful and I dare to say quite cunning. He watches everyone and sets things in motion that will surprise you. There’s also a twisted relationship that will break your heart.. talk about hate to love.
Subaru Natsuki (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu)
In this case we have the portrait of a shounen protagonist.. but with a twist. He is at first just trying to survive the weirdest of situations … getting back to life and experiencing death over and over will certainly take a toll on everyone… which makes his development as a character so much realistic, He suffers, he struggles to handle this ability and trying to cope with his hero like role..sometimes failing and others needing help from his friends… he is not over powered nor perfect… It gives us more that what we start with as the manga progresses.
Izumi Miyamura (Horimiya)
I just adore Miyamura, and i know that it might seem like cheating abit to throw him on this list since the whole premise of this manga is that people aren’t always what they appear but … He is the imagery of this post.. Someone who leaves you with such a different impression that what they actually are.. And once you do take the time to know them… it’s so very different than what you thought it would be..
I do recomend all three of this mangas (and their anime adaptations) not only because of these surprising characters but also because their stories in general also have that more than they seem quality to them.. And they are such fun reads..
