A Reviewer’s Minefield

Hey Guys! I have been Book Blogging for 5 years now… (I’m mindblown about that myself let me tell you..) And within those years I have reviewed quite a few books, Arcs, Manga… comes with the territory.

Sadly that territory has become a minefield lately. Personally, I’m truly thankful that I haven’t been on the receiving end of any trashing or public humiliation because of stating an opinion… I guess I have been lucky.. However It does strike a nerve when I see other book reviewers and bloggers go through that.

It’s un-freaking-believable to me that an Author (any author) feels the need to attack someone just because the reviewer didn’t like their work — (Sorry to burst your bubble.. but it happens.. not everyone will love what you write) Or even more shocking Go into a rage just because you didn’t get the rating you wanted (5 stars)

Reading is subjective, therefor reviewing it is also subjective. There’s no step by step guide on how to write a review… Some will tell you all about the book (spoilers and all) Some might be vague, Others will judge every little aspect of the book (characters, Writing style, plot) while others will go by feel (whatever emotion that book elicit in them) And that’s perfectly okay..

It’s depressing thinking that when you receive a review request now it’s tantamount to receiving a time bomb that you need to defuse… What shall I do in order not to have this blow up in my face if I don’t like the book? It’s crazy. Reviewers help new authors so much promoting their work… doing recommendations, book lists. They are the best of allies most of the time.

I know that we are not saints and we sometimes tend to judge too harshly and even badmouth an author’s work instead of explaining tactfully our dislike of a book… But again it comes with the territory. When you put yourself out there (online) You have to know that you will be liked, disliked, judged, and everything in between.. So, trying to control what people should say about you or your work it’s ridiculous.. as well as impossible in my opinion.

Reviewers are not an enemy to fight against.. they are a marketing target. You want them to read your book and like it, if they don’t.. just figure out why they didn’t and move on, improve yourself or change tactics, learn from the experience be humble.. Don’t attack them and demonize what we do, and how we do it.

Again I’m really thankful for the new author I have worked with. They have been great and I have never felt pressured in any way neither while I was writing my reviews nor after publishing them regardless of the rating given. That to me it’s how it should be.

What do you guys think? Are you hesitant to write reviews nowadays? Let me know all about your thoughts in the comments below
