Let Me Recommend – Romance Books Dealing with Mental Health

Hey guys it’s been a hot minute since I wrote a recommendations post — even if I’m sneakily recommending books all the time — It’s been a rough year (understatement of the century) and I’m not up to my usual machine like reading schedule… So, I didn’t want to repeat myself again and again, so I let time pass ( that way I could actually read new things) and I chose an uncommon subject… Romance Books that deal With Mental Health.

There are many books around that have either one supporting character dealing with some mental health issue.. or they tell you about how it’s like to live with mental illness, go through depression, dealing with anxiety, etc.. In this particular post, I’m focusing on books that are heavy on the romance and yet cleverly portray what it’s like living with some mental health issues…

It’s not very often that I found books that have a well-balanced depiction of this subject while juggling the relationship aspect as well.. One always suffers either it becomes an unhealthy relationship .. or a cartoon like representation of whatever mental illness we are dealing with.

However these books do have that perfect balance… even if there are a few that go a bit on the darker side of Mental Health.. so be warned..

Depression

I’m picky when reading book about this particular subject because I have first hand experience on what it’s like to live with someone going through Depression… But these two books manage to give us a broad spectrum.. One deals with someone who has hit rock bottom and has chosen to overcome the disease slowly and steadily with the help of his romantic interest… While the other goes to the darkest of depths…

Anxiety Disorder

I was pleasantly surprise with the way that this book handled this topic… In fact at first I thought I was getting a very cookie cut New Adult book but it turned out to be much more.

Dissociative Identity Disorder

This might come as a little spoilery and I apologize for that, but this book has so much more going on that I’m sure it will hook you in regardless..

Antisocial Personality Disorder

And the trilogy that actually inspired this whole post, our main protagonist was diagnosed with Antisocial personality Disorder but we also deal with addiction, suicide, Depression, and quite a few other hard-hitting topics because it’s set in a kind of mental institution/reformatory… so be warned… I won’t talk a lot about it because I’m putting together a whole review for it so sit back and wait for it or just dive in.

  1. Great post! I’ll definitely take a look at some of these. I recently read Alone With You In The Ether by Olivie Blake and it deals with mental illness and struggles in a very honest and thoughtful way.
