Hello fellow bookworms, isn’t it funny when you give a book a chance because you think it will go somewhere and then, when you are reading it, you realize how wrong you were? This can be a good thing or a bad thing, but in this particular case it was just an average thing.. Let’s dive in:
Spark by Sammy Reynolds
My reading experience when it comes to the “Omegaverse” is mostly based on manga and webtoons.. and I quite enjoy that world in this particular medium (most times). I could say that perhaps this affected my reading experience when it came to this book because it gave me preconceived notions about the world…
I was intrigued to read a book in this genre that would also feature the MC world setting… One book setting I enjoy and have read a lot, so I was truly curious about the mixing of the two.
It was entertaining, it reads fast enough and it has decent chemistry between the characters. However, I was a little fed up with how much homophobic behaviour was portrayed here. I understand that it helps set up the world.. you have to fight for acceptance, your own as well as that of your peers… but there’s a fine line between setting up the atmosphere and drowning in it..
It’s a fun read nonetheless, but check the trigger warnings before diving in.. and take notice of what you are getting into… if you don’t want to rage at how badly treated the main character is..
It was very different than what I was expecting, to be honest, and since it was set in the 80’s I enjoyed the throwback here and there, but it was missing something to make it go to the next level for me. It was merely an entertaining read.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
