Hey Guys… I’m bringing you a controversial Trope this time around – some love it others hate it with a passion – no, it’s not love triangles again – I’m talking about the Age Gap (Older women/Younger Men or Older Men/Younger Women) – I don’t particularly dislike this trope in fiction but I do find it a little cringe worthy on occasion..
I’m only focusing on Contemporary books for the time being (I promise to do a fantasy/ Paranormal rec on this particular trope soon) We all know the ginormous age differences in those genres right??
Older Woman/Younger Man
I do warn you guys that some of these books may have “problematic content” for some and they are adult reads, so with the warning out-of-the-way let’s dive in..
On The Island by Tracey Garvis Graves – This has quite an age gap since the guy is 17 and she is 30ish if I remember correctly but in their defense they were stranded on an island for a few years so everything evolves naturally and you just want them together…
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon – Do I really need to explain this one?? The age difference isn’t huge and the love story its amazing.
Unidentified Redhead by Alice Clayton – Laugh out loud story very much the style of Alice Clayton really a worthy read when you are just looking for some fun.
Noah by Elizabeth Reyes – This one is adorable.. how they fight their attraction due to the age difference, even to the point when you are yelling get together already and screw the rest…
Older Man/Younger Woman
This tend to be a more common trope (go figure) but it’s also a little on the cringe worthy side on occasion – and yet this are some of my favorites
Undeniable by Madeline Sheehan — I know that for some people this is the epitome of a cringe worthy relationship (the age gap is considerable) but you get so immerse in their world — they are an MC — and their rules and their live or die mentality that the rest doesn’t matter (Not for everyone, It’s a really dark read)
King by T. M. Frazier – This is quite similar to Undeniable (not an MC but a Criminal of Sorts) Very dark, and yet you root for their relationship in a twisted kind of way.
Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas — This book I love, there’s an age gap no doubt about it but the way it is written and how the relationship develops you hardly remember the differences between them… it’s a great read.
Managed by Kristen Callihan –– Not a huge difference here but it is an adorable office romance..
Amour Amour by Krista and Becca Ritchie — To be honest the last thing on my mind while I was reading this book was the age gap between the characters.. The Cirque de Soleil vibe, the family, the friendships and even the cutthroat competition in this world will suck you right in.
Manga
I don’t usually pay attention to the age gaps when it comes to manga but these two popped out as great reads and examples of each category:
Older Woman/Younger Man
Namaizikari – This manga is adorable.. and so perfect for those who enjoy not only a great slow burn relationship with all its struggles and cute moments but for those who are hooked on sports romances.. Basketball features a huge part on this manga, and I’m totally hooked and can’t wait for the next volume to come out.
Older Man/Younger Woman
Tsubaki Chou Lonely Planet — This is one of my favorite mangas… like ever… there’s a significant age difference (Sensei is way older) but they are so right for each other.. and the whole story just happens so fluidly and beautifully…
K-Dramas, Tv Series and Movies
There’s a few classic movies with this particular trope but they are not favorites of mine so I’m sticking with what I like and hope you will enjoy them too which are K-dramas.. For this I have 2 to recommend..
Pretty Noona Who Buys me Food — A little more dramatic than I was expecting but a good story nonetheless… I do warn you that it gets a little slow at times but it’s worth it.
I Hear Your Voice –– This has comedy, adorable characters, lots of romance and even thriller kind of action so, you can’t go wrong..
What do you think about this particular trope?? What are your favourite books about it?? Let me know in the comments below and if you want a recommendation on a particular trope just hit me with your suggestions and I’ll be happy to make a list…
As Always
Happy Reading
I love this trope though honestly, I usually prefer older man/younger woman rather than the other way around. Not sure why though?!? And I love both King and Undeniable! Also the Saint-Sinner series by M. Robinson, and Saffron Kent’s Medicine Man and The Unrequited are a few of my faves!😁 Great post!😍
